NO FIREFLIES

there are
no fireflies
here in this
city, just the
flicker of
headlights
on the
broken glass
of someone
else's good
time, and
there are
no mountains
here to climb
in this
concrete
prairie land
only the
hulking
ugliness of a
Fortune 500
skyline, its
monuments
to greed, the
grave markers
of the American
Dream, their
dirty shadows
drowning the
desperate
streets below
just a road
rage commute
for the pawns
of corporate
kings, the
anguished
armies of
workers
trudging
home to
their
barracks
for the night
hollow-eyed
and haggard
in this city
where
there are
no fireflies
and barely
a flicker
of hope

THE DRIFT

evidently
you've
survived
another
night, as
relentless
dawn
hoists itself
above the
horizon
and you
hoist yourself
out of bed
but this is
not
a life-
affirming
vignette
despite
the sun's
swagger
even while
muzzled
behind
a humid
shroud
of sky
and yes
yes
the haze
will burn off
but only
to reveal
a
deep
blue
drift
not unlike
your
own
deep
blue
blues
that
neither
sleep
nor drink
nor this
poem
can cloud
over for
very long
