She appears in the middle of the night,
following a path
carved out of the black orchard.
Nobody sees her arrive
except the wet grass and apple blossoms.
I hear her footsteps
enter the house – and see a slight girl
standing with her eyes closed,
walking around the kitchen.
Sometimes I think
she is an actress
from the nearby college,
studying for an upcoming role.
Sometimes I think
she's a Sister from
the convent
who's gone mad.
Like a spirit, she leaves
as the dawn light approaches.
